Hour of Twilight Dungeons and the New Raid Finder

For those of you who play world of warcraft, most of you already know the endless complaints about the most recent expansion, Cataclysm.  Personally, I never really figured out what all of the complaining was about, as I found nothing that really broke my trust in Blizzard Entertainment’s long line of quality work.  I guess what it really stems from is I’m a casual player.  I do not enjoy dedicating 165 hours a week to raids.  I prefer to see the content in all its glory (and pick up a few mounts along the way).

That being said, Blizzard has introduced a brand new feature for all of us casuals out there:  The Raid Finder.  Now originally on the Public Test Realm, all cataclysm raids were available on the raid finder.  However, when patch 4.3 went live, only the latest raid was made available.  Originally I was outraged and annoyed, as I was looking forward to seeing the raids that I had not gotten to see.  But once I got my item level high enough, I decided to check out for myself if it was really worth the wait.

First off, before being able to use the raid finder, I needed to get my item level up a little bit.  Now if you had completed the Firelands raid, and had full tier 12 gear or an equivalent (with an item level of 372), then you could just skip out on the dungeons and go right to the raid.  But I was only at 365.  So I hit my dungeon finder button, and low and behold, the queue times were down, and I was about to see something I didn’t expect:  A truly fun, mildly challenging, short dungeon.  This was a sigh of relief after the troll dungeons, which took about an hour and a half, with the queue included.  Instead, it was taking me 15-30 minutes per dungeon.  Because of this, I was able to accomplish something I had not done in a long time:  hitting my weekly cap of valor points.

At first, I had a little difficulty getting any loot, and most loot that I could use was an upgrade for the tank.  Since tanking is my off-spec, I decided to be a nice guy and pass on it.  But sure enough, after a week, I was sitting there with a 373 item level.

I was a bit tired, so I decided to wait until morning to check out the Raid Finder.  Well worth the wait.  The first part of the raid finder, Siege of Wyrmrest, only took me an hour to complete (I even scored some tier 13 shoulders).  The second part was a bit rougher, and took me almost 2 hours to complete.  But seeing Deathwing sinking into the maelstrom by my hand was so worth the wait.  The cinematics, the boss mechanics, and the feeling of accomplishment all blended together to create a truly epic, memorable experience, and made me say something that I never thought I would say.

I’m a casual, and I just downed Deathwing within the first week of release.

So please, all you casuals, and anyone who plays world of warcraft, get out there and slay yourself that twisted Aspect of death!

Chaos Orb, Throne of Tides Heroic, and My Love for Octomom

Chaos Orb, Throne of Tides Heroic, and My Love for Octomom

Joana's Guide

Last night was pretty exciting, and I really hadn’t planned on doing much, been a little bored with the same old grind of Tol Barad PvP, battle ground on the rogue, and then getting some pug instance with the palatard that doesn’t last (or lasts way too long…). I have got a few instances on the 65 hunter, and stalled on the druid (tho in vent I heard we need healers for raiding, so I may work on him a bit more diligently this weekend, to start getting gear for that…). I logged in on the rogue and queued up for a random regular, got in relatively quickly, and after the first pull, the guild leader asked me to hop on the pali to tank a guild heroic. We had already pulled the first 2 actual trash pulls in Grim Batol (not that non-elite shit right past the quest givers in the entrance, the first 2 groups of elites). Knowing it would take a few minutes to get a guild run together, I waited until we got done with the bombing run on the dragons, and saw this group really knew what they were doing, and took out a huge majority of the trash throughout the instance, so I told them I would tank as soon as I was done with GB.

Heroic-ification of Old Instances

With the release of Cataclysm, Blizzard did something that I would expect most people love (…the idea of…). I like it, but I think it’s just a way of adding a lot of content with not much extra work. This is the “heroicifying” (or would it be “heroification”?) of old instances. Last night I tried to run “SFK” with a partial guild group. It wasn’t pretty.

The guild I’m in was going to do a raid instance last night, but there were some teething issues. Many of our guild haven’t got to the self-imposed (and soft) 340 gearscore minimum, neither of my 85′s have. The palatard is 335, the rogue is 336 (but that is with several pieces of resilience gear, so he is actually much lower as far as raid gear goes). We started off with 5 guildies. We go in, and I guess I missed the healer saying afk or brb and I pulled the first group of trash. They almost killed us, but mid battle, the healer said he was back, and started healing (thank god for Word of Glory!). It was pretty cool to be back in SFK fir the first time in a couple years, it looks different, but that could be just the rose colored glasses (which got knocked right off my face and stepped on mercilessly by the first boss). Cleaned up the trash, got to the stairs going down to those holding cells and I asked what needed to be done and got a big nothing of an answer, so I asked if the group was ready and we went in. We started dpsing him down, and then he did is asphyxiate, which takes you to 1 HP and then he does Stay of Execution with heals him. Nice. The healer did what he could, I hit the pally group heal and WoG and went back to tanking him. Shortly thereafter, we were running back from the GY.
